This is still a big feature in the upcoming free-to-play MechWarrior Online, and today's developer blog provides new details on how this works.

All customization is done in a system called the MechLab. This is where you'll tinker with your mech's armaments, paying close attention to your chassis' "hardpoints." Every chassis has specific points on it where weapons can be equipped, and each hardpoint can only accomodate certain types of weaponry. For instance you can't put a ballistic weapon on an energy weapon hardpoint, or vice-a-versa.

 See MechWarrior in Action

Additionally, when outfitting your mech with weapons you have to consider its overall tonnage. Every mech chassis has a weight limit, and while you might get a rig with several hardpoints, you might only be able to fill a few of them if you pick heavier, more powerful weaponry.

Armor can also be customized on your mech. For every ton of armor purchased, the player gets to distribute 16 points on their chassis. Every mech chassis has a maximum amount of armor points, both for the mech overall and for specific spots. Points put into your torso are automatically split between your front and rear-facing armor.

Other mech modifications can also be added in the MechLab, including heatsinks, jump jets and modules. Modules are Pirahna's system for customizing a mech to suit your role on the battlefield, augmenting things like how far you can zoom in, or maybe giving you better thermal vision.

And, of course, MechLab also allows you to customize your mech's aesthetics. You can alter its color scheme, as well as apply patterns and decals. Skins that cover your entire mech will also be available for purchase.

For pictures that help explain the process in more detail, you can check out the developer's blog.
