Gettysburg: Armored Warfare: The Basics

What is Gettysburg: Armored Warfare?

Gettysburg: Armored Warfare is a real-time strategy/third-person shooter hybrid where a time traveler from the year 2060 travelled to 1860 and gave future technology to the Confederates in an attempt to change the course of the Civil War. Then someone from the government in 2060 travelled back in time to give the Union future technology to balance things out.

So Much Strategy

StarCraft II: Wings of Liberty Review

Dawn of War II: Retribution Review

Shogun 2 Review

Wait…what?

Yeah. So basically you get to create an army of Confederate/Union units and fight on a map with up to 63 other players and up to 1024 units on the map at once. At any time you can drop down to eye-level of any of the units and control directly, like any other shooter.

How much like a normal shooter?

A lot, actually. Units have hit-boxes, so headshots deal critical damage and all the other usual shooter fare is present. In shooter-mode you'll probably have better aim and be more efficient than the AI, which will act more like your standard RTS units.

Cool. What's this about "future technology?"

All your units blend futuristic technology with Civil War-era designs. Expect stuff like steam-powered tanks with massive cannons and rubber wheels, or Confederate Heavy-Weapons Specialists with massive, grey, mustaches to compliment their massive, grey, guns.

Can I change the mustache?

We're not sure, but there will be some soldier customization. You can change the sights on rifles, for example. Equipment changes have an impact on the way the soldier plays -- assumedly if you put a scope on a soldier's rifle, you'll be able to use that scope if you jump down to direct control.

What kind of units are in Gettysburg?

There are tanks, a few kinds of infantry, artillery and zeppelins.

I love real-time strategy games, especially all that base-building! Will I love this?

Nope! Gettysburg: Armored Warfare has no base-building, so really it probably counts as a real-time tactics game. You start with a flat number of units and will get reinforcements as entire platoons are wiped out. It's kind of like the Warhammer games where the units you start with are basically all you get.

How much will it cost?

Nothing! Gettysburg: Armored Warfare will be be free-to-play, and will follow a similar model to World of Tanks, which encourages players to buy gold to speed up their progress to upper-tier tanks.

When can I play it?

There's no official release date for Gettysburg: Armored Warfare yet, but we were told there would be a beta in the "next couple of months."

©2011-05-11, IGN Entertainment, Inc.
