Trump Cancels Meeting Over Pelosi SlamNewser — Newser Editors
Nancy Pelosi and President Trump escalated their war of words on Wednesday. It began when the House speaker addressed reporters after a closed-door meeting of Democrats. "We believe that no one is above the law, including the president of the United States, and we believe the president of the United States is engaged in a cover-up, in a cover-up," she said, per MSNBC.
Shortly afterward, Trump made an appearance in the Rose Garden to fire back. “I don’t do cover-ups,” Trump said, adding that he had cut short a meeting with Pelosi and Chuck Schumer on infrastructure spending because of the allegation.
“I walked into the room and I told Senator Schumer and Speaker Pelosi that I want to do infrastructure ... but you know what, you can’t do it under these circumstances," he said, reports the Hill.
Trump also said he was irritated to learn that their meeting had been set up to follow the House Democratic meeting, in which impeachment was discussed. He said he told Pelosi and Schumer to "get these phony investigations over with." Despite Pelosi's public comments, both the Washington Post and the AP report that during the House meeting, she continued to push back against rank-and-file members' pressure to begin impeachment hearings. Five of her committee chairs who addressed the meeting agreed, the exception being Financial Services chair Maxine Waters. “All I can tell you is I'm for impeachment, I’ve always been, I’ve never changed my mind," she told reporters afterward, per Politico.
(The House meeting came in the wake of this week's congressional no-show by former White House counsel Don McGahn.)
